Advanced Agroforestry Design Course

Date 07 Aug 2020 08:00 AM - 10 Aug 2020 04:00 PM Location The Kul Kul Farm

Join us in Bali, together with Paola and Valter from the renowned PretaTerra in Brazil to delve into 4 days of advanced agroforestry design and implementation. It will be an immersive course, teaching you the theory and practice of designing wholesome, dynamic, and resilient agroforestry systems using the forest as a model.

Forest ecosystems display many beneficial properties; they maintain, renew, fertilize and propagate themselves without human inputs; they build, store, and conserve clean air, clean water, nutrients, soil quality, and biodiversity; and they are stable, resilient, and adaptable. These qualities emerge from the dynamics of the forest as a whole system, not from any single element. To design productive agroforestry systems that express these same qualities, we must understand forest structures, functions, patterns, and processes and use this knowledge intelligently.

In this 4 day intensive course, you will dive deeply into the vision, theory, and practice of designing a productive agroforestry system. We will go through the agroforestry design process; you will learn how to identify and assess a site, it’s environmental and economic opportunities and challenges, how to create a planting map to select and arrange crops strategically and plan for the resources and inputs required. Finally you will learn how to manage the operations required to implement your design including creating a budget and defining revenue streams.

Together, we will implement the design on a site in Bali, near The Kul Kul Farm, discussing all the detail involved in implementation; soil management, fertilization, tools and equipment, propagation, planting techniques, soil protection, pruning and more. You will leave inspired and empowered to design agroforestry systems at home for yourself, your friends, neighbours and clients.

MORE OF WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
Regenerative Agroforestry Principles – applying the logics of the forest into production systems
Natural succession and stratification
Soil conditions
Ecosystem services and socioeconomic benefits
Agroforestry design and implementation
Agroforestry planning
Context and site analysis
Species selection and arrangement
Seeds, seedlings, inputs, equipment and labour needs
Implementation and management operations
Costs, production and revenue structure

This is a course for nature lovers, farmers, agriculture enthusiasts, landscape designers, agronomists, horticulturists, forest engineers, rural policy makers, sustainability educators and everyone looking to learn and spread advanced and applied agroforestry knowledge. After the course you will be able to plan and implement a viable, productive, regenerative and biodiverse agroforestry system on the ground in your own context.

HERE’S WHAT PAST STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS COURSE:

“PRETATERRA offers one of the most complete courses focused on agroforestry systems, with maximum logic and using innovative methods. The entire co-creation of the design process goes far beyond generic or decorated knowledge, they explain the logic and replicability of systems, form people capable of disseminating knowledge and reproducing, in the field, in the most different biomes, the practices learned. I highly recommend taking a course with Valter and Paula.” Juliano Naldi – Brazil
(@julianobnaldi)

“Valter and Paula used to be part of our R&D team at Fazenda da Toca in Brazil. They are great professionals and some of the greatest specialists on agroforestry systems. They helped us a lot to design our agroforestry on a large scale. We are very grateful to them and their work. Organic farm “Fazenda da Toca” – Brazil (@tocaorganicos)

“What an amazing workshop! Thank you PRETATERRA for creating such an amazing agroforestry opportunity for me! The energy was high and it has given me confidence and inspired me to keep going forward with agroforestry!” Robert Burke – Australia (@greenthumbaus)

YOUR TEACHERS

Valter Ziantoni – MSc. Agroforestry, Forest Engineer, Management and International Relations Specialist, Valter developed his master’s thesis in Lake Tanganyika (Zambia), working with local indigenous knowledge and applying systematized solutions to foster the success of sustainable projects. With more than 15 years of agroforestry experience, including local knowledge systematization, forest inventories and monitoring, and timber and NTFP classification in the Amazon. Extensive experience in rural economy and sustainable development models, with international experience (Laos, UNDP, and Turkey, FAO-SEC) in management and leadership positions. Valter was responsible for the coordination of research projects in the R&D section of Organic Farm ‘Fazenda da Toca’ (Brazil).

Paula Costa – Forest Engineer, Specialist in Environmental Management, and Biologist. Paula has been awarded by the Brazilian Society of Forestry and Silviculture and has more than 10 years of experience in regenerative production systems, with advanced knowledge in dendrology, botanic and native trees. Paula coordinated the R&D field team and the agroforestry production systems of ‘Fazenda da Toca’ (Brazil), and carried out forest restoration projects, using innovative seedlings and seeds techniques, and horticulture and fruticulture agroforestry designs, in the majority of Brazilian biomes. She participated in sustainable projects, providing technical assistance and capacity building for farmers and communities in various regions of Latin America and Asia.
